Healthy, strong family relationships are foundational to young people’s growth, learning, and well-being.

These relationships build strong social and emotional strengths that kids use throughout their lives.

But great family relationships don’t just happen..

Welcome to My Discovery Destination!

and to support parents in raising happy, successful, resilient kids in an exciting,

but sometimes turbulent and dangerous world.

Choose from the Adventures listed below

(or design your own family adventure!)

Family Adventure

GOAL:  Learn about poetry and support linguistic diversity through poetic expression.

The ADVENTURE:   Explore different types of poetry an/or practice writing a poem yourself.

TIPS/REWARD Suggestions:

Let the kids help choose the poets they want to learn about

Find something to love about your child's attempts at poetry, and let them know how much you love it!

Really pay attention to the poetry and what it tells you about your child. Particularly with the Bio poetry, hear what they are saying and celebrate the things they reveal about themselves. Honor what is important to them by showing respect for and supporting the talents and interests that they reveal about themselves.

Put your child's poetry on the fridge or in a place where it can be seen and appreciated for the next several days or weeks or even months.

If you have a good opportunity, QUOTE their poetry! That will make them feel extremely important, and will let them know you were paying attention.

“Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular”. –Aristotle

Poetry is a poignant art of expression It speaks for all and touches our hearts.  Poetry shows that despite the divisions and disparities, much of what we feel and experience is similar and so is our relation with the nature.  It gives voice to the deepest feelings of our hearts.

For this Adventure you will want to enjoy some of your favorite poems together and explore different forms of poetry.  Do you have a Shel Silverstein book? Or Dr. Seuss books? Perhaps you have a favorite book of poetry or a favorite poem you have loved your whole life that you want to share. SHARE IT!

Because the world of poetry is vast and varied, there are poems out there you will love and types of poems you will enjoy writing. You just need to take some time exploring, learning, and finding your own poetic voice.

Here are some websites that can help you learn more about different poetic forms:

You probably remember learning about haiku and limericks and several other types of poetry, and of course you know that not all poetry has to rhyme. Whether you think you are a poet or not, here are five poetic forms that are not only simple to do, but a ton of fun!

Take some time as a family to try out these poetic styles and see what you come up with!

ABC Poems

In an ABC poem, each line of the poem begins with a letter in the alphabet, starting with A and moving in order through Z.

Poem About A Friend:

Accepts you as you are
Believes in you
Calls you just to say Hi
Doesn't give up on you.
Envisions the whole of you even the unfinished parts.
Forgives your mistakes
Gives unconditionally
Helps you
Invites you over
Just be with you
Keeps you close at Heart
Loves you for who you are
Makes a difference in your life
Never Judges
Offers Support
Picks you up
Quiets your fears
Raises your spirits.
Says nice things about you
Tells you the truth when you need to hear it
Understands You
Values You.
Walks beside you
Explains things you don't understand
Yells when you won't listen and
Zaps you back to reality.

See how that works?  Here is another example that is a little more complex:

If Only...
A prayer was held in our nation,
Beauty was seen in more ways than one,
Children who are lost could find their salvation,
Death was slain and torture was done.

If Only...
Earth was awakened after years of endurance,
Forgotten feelings were rekindled anew,
God was man's only path and assurance,
Hope was the foundation of the world we knew.

If Only...
I knew more stories than those that were told,
Joy was a plague, and peace a disease,
Knowledge was worth more than silver and gold,
Love was sacred and endless as the seas.

If Only...
Miracles were seen more than daylight,
Never was replaced with forever,
Our eyes could see through the dark of the night,
Passion lived in us more than ever.

If Only...
Questions were answered, and answers were questioned,
Roses were pure and without thorns,
Sadness received only love and affection,
The empty knew why it was they were born.

If Only...
Us as a nation would join hands in song,
Victory was a gift to the humble,
When tears were shed, the earth felt strong,
Exalted men would fall and crumble.

If Only...
You and I would last forever.

If Only...

Now try to create your own ABC poem.  Choose one of the topics below or come up with your own:

  • Poem about My Family
  • Poem about Me
  • When I Grow Up
  • If I Were In Charge
  • It's a Brand New Day . . .
  • And My Future Begins

Another fairly easy style of poetry to try is Acrostic. Acrostic is a form of poetry where the first or last letters of each line create a name, word, or phrase. You can find these words by looking vertically at the beginning or end of the lines.

And smells like burning rubber.

Here is another format, and another example:

Line 2: It smells like...

Line 3: It tastes like...

Line 4: It sounds like...

Line 5: It feels like...

Line 6: It looks like...

Line 7: (Emotion) is...

It smells like a deep red rose opening in the sun.
It tastes like delectable chocolate melting in your mouth.
It sounds like the birds chirping on a clear spring morning.
It feels like a fire on a cold winter's night.
It looks like an ocean scene painted by God.
Love is unpredictable and breathtaking.
