Geo Genius

Family Adventure

Geocaching is an outdoor recreational activity in which participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or mobile device and other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers, called "geocaches" or "caches", anywhere in the world.

Learn about geocaching by checking these online resources: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geocaching and others you find interesting.

Pre-K Adventure

Geocahing is a fun way that we learn how to find a treasure using coordinates. You can learn how to find "treasure" using a map. For this Adventure

  • create a map of your yard or house with your parent.
  • Have your parent hide a picture of Wattson for to find.
  • Parents should give you the first clue to find the next clue, etc.

Parents:  Set-up a treasure hunt for your child. Start by giving them the first clue and have your child follow clues hidden at different places that coordinate with your map. Depending on the age of your child I would do 3 to 5 clues. You could also play it by hiding Wattson and then having your child come back in the room and say hot when they are close and cold when they are going in the wrong direction. Of course, they may want to play it the other way around as well with the hiding Wattson and having YOU find him!

Community Engagement Adventure

Now that you know what geocaching is you are ready to give it a try! Grab a friend, the necessary supplies, and head out on a geocaching adventure in your very own neighborhood to help us set-up a Where's Wattson? geocaching network.

  • Print off this picture of Wattson along with the instructions,
  • write your own message on the back including your FIRST NAME ONLY and the date,
  • protect it with lamination or even just tape, and put him in a weather-proof container with the logbook and pencil.
  • Include something that is significant to you if you would like, and set out to hide your Wattson geocaching treasure.
  • Be sure to send the coordinates of where your geocache is hidden to MyDiscoveryDestination@gmail.com so that we can add it to the database for the Where's Wattson? Geocaching Community Competition we will be holding as well as the ongoing geocachers.
