Summer of Service

Family Adventure

You may not be able to solve world hunger or eliminate illiteracy all by yourself, but by serving in our local communities, together we can make an impact. After all, you may only be one but you ARE one. Our individual efforts don't need to be huge—a little bit of change here, a few hours there— even small efforts quickly add up to make a real difference.

There are also other benefits of serving in the community. As you work side-by-side with other people you will learn from each other, mutual understanding will increase, misconceptions can be corrected, and new friendships will be built. Serving those around you is a blessing to both those served, and those who serve!

For this adventure spend a few minutes on JustServe.org and find a project in your area you would like to volunteer with. Spend 2-3 hours helping. Leverage your volunteer efforts by creating a short video of your volunteer work and submitting it to the Super Service Challenge to help bring additional funding back to your community and the non-profit organizations that you love. You can get all of the details on the Super Service Challenge adventure page.

Pre-K Adventure

A perfect place to start the habit of volunteering is in your own home with those you love most. Think of one nice thing you can do for each family member that will put a smile on their face, and then do it! Follow up by discussing with your parent what you did. Here are some questions to think about:

  • How did it make you feel to do something nice for someone else?
  • How did the person you served act? Did they seem to be happy about it?
  • How do you think they treated other people after you served them?
  • Considering their response, how many people do you think your service helped?

Parents- you can help your child leverage your family volunteer efforts by creating a short video of your volunteer work and submitting it to the Super Service Challenge to help bring additional funding back to your community and the non-profit organizations that you love. You can get all of the details on the Super Service Challenge Adventure!

Community Engagement Adventure

Now that you know where to find volunteer projects, and how to leverage your efforts with the Super Service Challenge, it's time to share the information with your friends so that they can volunteer as well. Tell at least 5 friends about JustServe.org and the Super Service Challenge. Then get together with some of them, find a project you are excited about, and organize a neighborhood volunteer project to help with it. Create and submit a video to the Super Service Challenge and then work together as a group to help it get as many votes as possible.

Your project doesn't have to come from JustServe.org. It's important to know where you can find a place to volunteer, but it's just as important to look around you and find opportunities to serve right where you are when needed-- cleaning up the local park, weeding or yard work for the elderly, a babysitting group to give young mothers a break . . . there are needs all around you. Keep your eyes open and JUST SERVE!

Teen Adventure

It’s time to start thinking about scholarships and resumes, and the one thing that will set you apart from the pack is volunteer work. Check out JustServe.org to find a cause or organization that you can be passionate about and make arrangements to volunteer with them on a regular basis.

Next, leverage your volunteer efforts by creating a short video of your volunteer work and submitting it to the Super Service Challenge to help bring additional funding back to your community and the non-profit organizations that you love. You can get all of the details on the Super Service Challenge Adventure.

It's also important for you to TRACK your volunteer hours. Be sure you are keeping a record of your volunteer work. It will make it MUCH easier when you start filling out applications. If you don't have an easy resource for tracking your hours feel free to email us at MyDiscoveryDestination@gmail.com and we'll send you some resources.

Mission Statement:

JustServe.org is a website where the volunteer needs of organizations can be posted and volunteers can search for places to serve in the community.

Why should I volunteer?

We may not solve world hunger immediately, but we’re convinced that by serving with each other in our local communities, we’re paving the way for much broader changes. Our individual efforts don’t need to be huge—a little bit of change here, a few hours there—but even small efforts quickly add up to make a real difference.

As we work side-by-side and learn from each other, mutual understanding increases, misconceptions can be corrected, and new friendships are built.
