FAMILY MEDIA PLAN

FAMILY NAME: ______________________________

Do you know how many hours you and/or your family spend on their electronic devices? At what age should a kid have a smart phone and how much access should they have?

BED TIME - FAMILY TIME

Bedroom - Phones can disrupt sleep. Bedrooms should be a phone free zone. Decide what time at night all electronic devices come out of the bedrooms and are placed in a central location, or if electronic devices should be allowed in the bedrooms at all.

Kitchen, Meal times - Make meal time a family connection time. To help your family stay connected it is important to unplug and connect. Decide as a family when should be electronic free time. We recommend using such items as table talk cards to help create family conversations and/or reading short essays together which can be talked about during meal times.

SCREEN FREE ZONES

What locations in your home should be screen free?

For example bedrooms, kitchen, game rooms, the family car, etc

Diversify your media view options as a family. Media is a great way to start conversations and to interact with each other. For example you can watch a video together and talk about it. You can play a video game together and talk about the game and what games are best to play.

RECREATIONAL TIME

Recreational screen time - Kids and adults can enjoy recreational screen time which is uplifting. They can also engage in media that is over stimulating to the brain and designed to form sedentary habits and addiction. Decide as a family how recreational screen time should be spent. For example reading a book or playing a violent video game, using social media, or creating puzzles. Set limits for recreational screen time based on age and maturity levels. Remember as parents you have the right to decide at what age and how much access a kid should have with electronic devices.

Increase non-screen time in family - Once you have completed the media plan, set goals as a family to engage in activities which increase physical movement and are face-to-face interactive. For example play games outside, do a puzzle together, engage in board games, go camping, take a hike, go to the park, etc.

DIGITAL SCREEN TIME

Set digital safety rules - Today perpetrators use social media to groom victims. Teach your children the importance of being digitally safe and what is appropriate to share online and what is not appropriate.

Sleep and Exercise - Current research indicates that less than 5% of the youth today get the exercise they need. Educate your children on the importance of sleep and exercise. Chose when to turn devices off before bedtime. Best recommendation is at least two hours before bedtime.
